If you’re heading out on vacation, preparing your home’s hot water tank can help you save energy and prevent potential issues while you’re away. Here are a few simple steps to take before leaving:

  • Turn Off or Adjust the Temperature: If your hot water heater has a “vacation mode,” switch to that setting. This lowers the temperature to conserve energy without fully turning off the system. If you don’t have this option, lowering the thermostat to about 50°F (10°C) or turning off the water heater entirely will suffice. Just remember, if you have an older gas heater, you may need to relight the pilot light when you return.
  • Shut Off the Water Supply: Shutting off the water supply to the tank helps prevent leaks or flooding, especially in the case of a tank malfunction. This is particularly important if you’re away for an extended period.
  • Drain the Tank (Optional): For longer vacations, you may choose to drain the water tank entirely. This step is more intensive but can prevent sediment build-up while you’re away.
  • Check for Leaks or Damage: Before leaving, inspect your tank for any signs of leaks, corrosion, or damage. Addressing these issues ahead of time can save you from costly repairs when you return.

Taking these precautions ensures energy savings and minimizes the risk of water damage, giving you peace of mind while on vacation.
