Stinky Sinks and Toilets?

What is that smell???

Kitchen or Bathroom Drains?

Once per week you can pour boiling water down your sink or shower drains and then pour ¼ cup of baking soda down the drain leaving it for about 10 minutes. Then, follow it with one cup of hot vinegar. Let the mixture fizzle and work for a few minutes, then finish by turning on hot water. In a kitchen sink if you have one, run the disposal for 20 seconds to clear out any leftover food waste.

Basement Floor Drains?

If you have a bad odour coming from your floor drain in the basement it’s likely the p-trap in the floor has dried out. Simply pour a few gallons of hot water down the drain to restore the proper water barrier. If you have a floor drain, laundry sink, tub or any other sink drain in the basement, poor water down these drains to fill the p-trap and stop the sewage odour from coming up. You can add a small amount of hot vinegar to help remove any persistent odours.

Should I Use Bleach In My Drains?

Bleach is caustic to metal drain pipes. We do not recommend the use of bleach or chemical cleaners in your household drains as this can damage the pipes in your home causing a much larger problem.  Remember too that it is bad for the environment. If you have poured bleach down the drain, make sure to dilute it with lots of water. Toxic gases can be created when using bleach as well so never mix bleach with other cleaners.

Toilet Trap - Sewer Gases?

It is not as common but even the trap in your toilet can dry out if it isn’t being used regularly. Simply flushing the toilet should eliminate the odour. Another culprit with a smelly toilet can be a bad wax seal. Sometimes the seal can leak, especially if you have a toilet that rocks. In this case the toilet will need to be removed, the wax sealed replaced and the rocking toilet should be fixed with the use of plastic shims.
